Police say ‘ex-gay’ leader of prayer group, Tyler Deaton, plotted to kill wife

On Tuesday, Kansas City, Mo. police said Tyler Deaton, the leader of a Christian prayer group called cult-like, allegedly conspired to kill Bethany Deaton, his wife of only four months.
According to the Advocate, Deaton, 26, struggled with his homosexuality, and believed he had transformed his sexual orientation from gay to straight.

Micah Moore, 23, a member of the prayer group told authorities Deaton convinced him to murder Bethany, 27, and make it look like a suicide. According to The Kansas City Star, Moore admitted to killing the young newlywed by placing a plastic bag over her head.
The Star reports that Moore also gave investigators inside information regarding the prayer group, saying all of its members lived together in one house and used sex as a spiritual device. Moore also claims that Bethany was sexually assaulted by a number of male members of the group over the past several months.

Deaton initially founded a campus prayer group while attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, Tex. One member of the group said Deaton considered himself victorious because he “overcame” his homosexuality.
In 2009, Deaton and Bethany reportedly joined the International House of Prayer’s school and ministry in Kansas City.
The Advocate reports, “Bethany and Tyler wed in August. Since then some of the members of the group began drugging and assaulting Bethany, while also engaging in sexual acts with Tyler, as part of the ‘religious experience,’ witnesses told police.”
Moore told police that Deaton was worried his wife would divulge the sexual attacks to a therapist, which is why he wanted her dead.
The International House of Prayer (IHOP) released a statement denouncing Deaton and his actions, noting his name was incorrectly added to a list of small groups affiliated with the religious organization. IHOP leaders said they “deeply regret" failing to "discern the nature of Deaton’s alleged secretive, perverse, cultic practices…” and said Deaton was incorrectly labeled a divisional coordinator by a volunteer, according to Yahoo News.
Well, now it makes sense, the *cure* for homosexuality, is MORE sex with men...why didn't I think of that?
