I've been purposely avoiding the whole *Duck Dynasty* bullshit, mostly because I grew up in the south, and nothing about the story shocks or surprises me.

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone who both looks like Phil or thinks just like him.
People like him are *willfully* ignorant and wallow in it like pigs in the mud, mercifully free from the ravages of intelligence.

But I ran across this piece on Johns blog and found it so amusing, I thought I'd share it with all of you.

Here's the gist of the story in Johns words:

In a rather odd trip to Walmart last night (it was mom’s idea), my family was in the “holiday” section looking through half-priced Christmas leftovers when my 17 year old nephew walks up holding a “Duck Dynasty ‘Si’ Clock.”  He pushes the button, and asks me what I think it’s saying.

I thought he’d asked me “who” it sounded like, and told him I didn’t know. No, he said, WHAT’s it SAYING?

My mom and my other nephew, before I could even answer, both respond: “Heil Hitler.”

Asshat Brian Brown: Elites 'Bludgeon' Gay Marriage Opponents Into Submission

During an appearance on MSNBC's UP, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), faced a hostile crowd.

On the program, Brown disagreed with host Steve Kornacki's conclusion that a majority of Americans now support marriage equality.

“When it comes to same-sex marriage, we're talking about a country in the last 15 years that has fundamentally changed majority support for this,” Kornacki said.

“I actually disagree with that. Of course the polling has moved. Why would the polling not move in the direction of redefining marriage when you have almost all of the elites trying to bludgeon and put down people who disagree with this new orthodoxy as somehow …,” Brown said before being interrupted.

Brown later added that if his side loses a proposed constitutional amendment in Indiana to limit marriage to heterosexual couples next year, his group would “continue and stand up and fight in and out of season for the truth. And the truth is, and Americans know this, the truth is there is something unique and special about men and women coming together in marriage and that is not bigotry.”

Aisha Moodie-Mills of the Center for American Progress disagreed.

“You know I'm reminded, it's a very short history here, of all of the arguments that were made to support Jim Crow laws, to support slavery, right? All the kind of anti-miscegenation that was happening. And it is absolutely the same type of bigotry. What we're talking here is a group of people who think that because there are other folks who are different they should be treated differently under the law,” Moodie-Mills said.

Pope Francis Takes A Piss On The Advocates *Man Of The Year* Award

The Advocate and Time's Person of the Year has been lauded by many for what they interpret to be his more progressive approach to sexuality. However, according to The Telegraph, Pope Francis I openly encouraged Bishop Charles Scicluna of Malta (pictured below) to condemn adoption of children by same-sex couples in his Christmas sermon once the Bishop shared his concern with His Holiness:

Bishop Scicluna met Pope Francis on December 12. The bishop later told the Times of Malta: “We discussed many aspects… and when I raised the issue that’s worrying me as a bishop [the right for gay couples to adopt] he encouraged me to speak out."

Indeed, the Pope was "shocked" to learn that Malta's proposed Civil Union bill allows gay adoption. And Bishop's Scicluna's controversial sermon seems to have been delivered at his prompting.

None of this should be surprising: back in Argentina, Cardinal Bergoglio roundly condemned gay adoption and said that gay marriage was diabolically inspired. But confusingly – and I still can't quite figure this out in my head – he did clearly back civil partnerships as the lesser of two evils. (When Archbishop Vincent Nichols appeared to do that, his critics in the Vatican were furious.)

Journalist James Bloodworth, in a new op-ed originally published on, remains doubtful that Francis is as liberal and progressive as some would like to believe and argues little has changed in terms of doctrine since Francis took the keys to the Holy See from Pope Benedict:

Pope Benedict was a PR disaster for the church. Yet under Francis little of substance has actually changed. The Catholic Church continues to vehemently discriminate against gay people and women, it’s simply sugar-coated its message with fashionable sound bites about inequality. And depressingly this has worked. Many otherwise erstwhile progressives have fallen into line faster than Danny Alexander at a cabinet meeting.

We should, however, reject the notion that someone who can rescind the Church’s stance on gay sex, and chooses not to do so, is a figure worthy of admiration. Nor, if he won’t countenance women priests, is there a reason to suppose the Pope has anything of note to say about poverty. Why waste precious time worrying about anything such a person thinks?

Aside from the fact that we still hold religious figures to a lower standard than secular ones, the fawning over Pope Francis demonstrates something profoundly depressing: in the struggle for a better world, women’s and LGBT rights are still not taken seriously.

You'll recall that earlier this year, Francis excommunicated an Australian priest who was a vocal advocate of ordination for women and gay marriage. However, as Time points out, the Priest in question was "already tagged for removal before Francis took office in March."

Far be it for me to whip out the ol' I told ya so...Oh fuck it, I did tell ya so!
Wonder how the self loathing gay republicans who run the Advocate will spin this little turd into gold?

Utah Republicans Back Plan To Spend $2 Million Defending Gay Marriage Ban

Key GOP lawmakers in Utah are on board with a plan to spend as much as $2 million in outside counsel to defend the state's gay marriage ban.

In 2004, 65.8 percent of voters approved Amendment 3, which prohibits the state from recognizing any union other than a heterosexual marriage.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby earlier this month declared the amendment invalid, which led to a rush of gay and lesbian couples marrying in Utah.

After the state was denied four requests for a stay by three judges, including two at the appellate level, it announced that it would hire outside counsel before asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block the ruling as an appeal moves forward.

“We need the best we can get,” House Speaker Becky Lockhart, a Republican from Provo, is quoted as saying by Salt Lake City's KSL TV.

Incoming Attorney General Sean Reyes met with House leaders on Friday to lay out his strategy.

“To go through the court process on an issue that on a 2-to-1 vote the people of our state felt was important to have in our constitution, I think is of value,” Lockhart said after meeting with Reyes.

Senate President Wayne Niederhauser, also a Republican, who has yet to talk with Reyes, has also signed off on the additional expenditure, at least in principle.

“This is a big deal for the Legislature and for Utah,” Niederhauser said. “We want the details, but my guess is that our body, the Senate Majority Caucus, is going to be very supportive of that idea.”

Republican Senator John Valentine agreed: “We should be paying for the best and the brightest. This is a case that is not only a historic precedent, but it's one that really goes to the core of what state's rights is all about.”

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest LGBT rights advocate, criticized the move.

“Defending discrimination while spending millions of taxpayer dollars to do it is beyond explanation,” the group said in a statement. “It should be an affront to all Utahans that their hard-earned tax dollars – dollars that should be going into schools, roads or health programs – will instead be used to be on the wrong side of history.”

“It's time to end this waste of public resources and allow couples to continue experiencing the joy of marriage,” the group added.
Yup, that's exactly what Utahans need, their tax dollars wasted defending the indefensible.
I hope they spend all their money doing so, every last friggin' penny of it!
It's the only way to really hurt a republican bigot.

Woman Responds To Anti-Gay Neighbors With Gayest Holiday Lights Ever

From Shewired:
An Irvine, Calif. woman raised a rainbow flag on her home in a show of support for LGBT people last April only to become the target of antigay rhetoric and hate mail, reports The Pleasure But don’t worry, because Dr. Mary Pham beat the hate with an absolutely brilliant response that is actually also perfect timing for the holiday season!

Pham raised her pride flag last spring as her neighbors were raising seasonal and sports flags. A friend had warned her against the rainbow flag saying, “Not in Irvine, Mary,” but Pham hung her flag despite the protestation, according to our friends at the Pleasure Chest.

“Look, either you know what it is or you don’t,” Pham said in response. “Either it’s a pride flag, or it’s just a rainbow flag. And if it’s a pride flag, and you notice, either you like it or you hate it. And if you hate it then you’re just a jerk.”

Within a few months Pham heard stories that some of her neighbors had penned hateful letters to the Home Owners Association. One person deemed Pham’s flag a “fag flag.”

In the face of controversy Pham consulted with The Center OC, the local LGBT center, and the director there suggested she file a police report as a precaution.

Just this month she was interviewed for the OC Weekly and Pham told the paper that she had decided to fight hate with love (and thousands of sparkly rainbow lights). Here’s what Pham and her son did to make the biggest statement she could think to make!

Found this while perusing my fave news sites Xmas evening and thought it was a perfect end to the holiday.
