Actually, English, like all languages, is always changing, not least by the introduction of new words and new spellings (Noah Webster famously and deliberately simplified spellings when he published his now-definitive Dictionary). I doubt that "boi" was ever done in error, but, in any case, is now common usage, and that's all it takes!
