Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown has
criticized a federal appeals court ruling that left gay marriage bans
in four states standing.
On Thursday, the Sixth Circuit Court of
Appeals in Cincinnati upheld bans in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and
Tennessee.
In writing the majority opinion, Judge
Jeffrey Sutton, a George W. Bush nominee, said that voters, not
judges, should decide the issue.
“I don't understand these ivory tower
judges who are offended because somebody loves somebody and wants to
marry her or him,” Brown
told WSPD.
“Judge Sutton tore a page out of the
Republican Party playbook and simply regurgitated Republican Party
talking points.”
Brown added that he believes gay
couples will be able to marry in Ohio and the rest of the nation
within five years and predicted that Ohioans would approve a proposed
ballot question scheduled for 2016.
“If this is on the ballot in Ohio
again, Ohioans will overwhelmingly vote for it,” Brown said.
Ohio's ban was approved in 2004 with 62
percent of the vote.
Seems the Supreme Court would concur with your assessment since out of 26 cases ruled on by this court, 24 have been overturned by them.
