Georgia Governor vetoes anti-gay ‘religious liberty’ bill

Under mounting pressure, Georgia’s governor has vetoed a controversial anti-gay ‘religious liberty’ bill.
Governor Nathan Deal said at a press conference Monday that House Bill 757 is not reflective of the state’s ‘warm, friendly and loving people.
‘If it had been signed into law by Deal, the bill would have allowed pastors in the state to not perform same-sex weddings if that made them uncomfortable.
It also would have given faith-based organizations in the state the option of refusing services to anyone they found ‘objectionable’ or to not hire or retain employees.
‘Our people work side by side without regard to the color of our skin, or the religion we adhere to. We are working to make life better for our families and our communities. That is the character of Georgia. I intend to do my part to keep it that way,’ Deal said. ‘For that reason, I will veto HB 757.’
The state faced the prospect of enormous backlash from the business community it the bill had been signed into law.
Georgia is a film production hub with Marvel currently shooting ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ at Pinewood Studios outside Atlanta. The Walt Disney Co. and Marvel Studios had threatened to no longer film there.
