PayPal Drops Expansion Plans In North Carolina

North Carolina’s new anti-LGBT law has quickly cost the state at least 400 future jobs.
PayPal, which had planned to open a new global operations center in Charlotte, announced Tuesday (5 April) that those plans have now been scrapped.
‘The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture,’ PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman writes in an open letter posted on the company website.
‘This decision reflects PayPal’s deepest values and our strong belief that every person has the right to be treated equally, and with dignity and respect. These principles of fairness, inclusion and equality are at the heart of everything we seek to achieve and stand for as a company. And they compel us to take action to oppose discrimination.’
Schulman adds: ‘Our decision is a clear and unambiguous one.
The legislation, HB 2, was hurried through the House and Senate last month after the city of Charlotte approved legislation that would allow transgender people to use public restrooms in fitting with their gender identity.
Governor Pat McCrory signed the bill later that same day (23 March), saying at the time that it was a matter of ‘common sense’.

PayPal will now be looking for another location for its global operations center.
