The COJ cited the judge’s ‘disregard for binding federal law’ and ‘his history with this court.’
In 2003 Moore was removed from office by the COJ after putting a large statue of the Ten Commandments in the state judicial building in Montgomery. He was told to take it down but, after refusing, was removed from office.
‘Chief Justice Moore is Exhibit A for why we shouldn’t elect judges in the first place,’ says Lambda Legal’s Fair Courts Project Director Eric Lesh.
‘Roy Moore’s defiance of federal law, his overtly political actions and his disparaging statements about LGBT people contravene his ethical obligations,’ Lesh adds.
‘The people of Alabama deserve better from the head of their state judiciary.’
