Orlando, Florida will buy Pulse nightclub and convert the site into a memorial.
Mayor
Buddy Dyer has said the city has reached a deal to buy the gay
nightclub for $2.25 million, around $600,000 more than its
appraised value.
On 12 June, 49 people were killed and 53 people were injured.
It was the deadliest shooting attack, and the biggest act of LGBT hate crime, in modern US history.
Dyer
has told the Orlando Sentinel the site will remain as it is for the
next 12 to 18 months as it has become a gathering place for mourners.
And then, the city will reach out to the LGBT community for advice on what the memorial will look like.
It is unknown whether the building will remain or not.
Barbara
Poma, who opened Pulse nightclub in honor of her gay brother who died
from AIDS, said her life’s mission is now to keep the memories of the
victims alive.
‘We just have to move forward and find a way to keep their hearts beating and the spirit alive,’ she said.
‘We’re not going to allow anyone to take that away from us.’
