Rep. Earl Blumenauer is nobody’s idea of an anti-gay rights social conservative.
But the Portland Democrat says he does have a pretty conservative definition of a vegetable – and it doesn’t include treating tomato sauce smeared on a school-lunch pizza as an honest-to-God veggie.
Blumenauer decided to drive home his point by using the words of an ardent foe of gay marriage to attack provisions in a spending bill passed by Congress that allows schools to continue treating simple cheese pizzas as a vegetable serving.
The result was a video featuring Blumenauer riffing off of a 2006 speech by then-Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., charging that society was taking a dangerous step by redefining marriage to include gay couples.
After substituting vegetables for marriage, Blumenauer was ready to hit the House floor Thursday.
"The problem we have in front of us is the institution of vegetables has been weakened in this country," proclaimed Blumenauer, calling it "this vast social experiment" to redefine the humble vegetable "differently than it has ever been defined by mankind before."
The video concludes by urging viewers: "Stand up for a traditional definition of vegetables." No word from Blumenauer yet on whether he's now cooking up plans to introduce the Defense of Vegetables Act.
