The great Austrian statesman Prince Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz was born in Vienna in 1711. Single-handedly he engineered an alliance between traditional enemies France and England, Eccentric, arrogant, conceited and always happy to hear the sound of his own voice, he had a virtual harem of young men.

Von Steuben was forced to leave Baden (a German state) where he was threatened with prosecution for homosexuality.[17] When he joined Washington's army at Valley Forge in February 1778 he was accompanied by two young European aides, one aged 17. Despite rumors about his parties, there never was an investigation of Von Steuben and he received a Congressional pension after the war
