Slovenia's parliament voted on a bill late Tuesday to legalize
same-sex marriages, and grant such unions equal rights to those of
heterosexual couples, AFP reported.
The bill, proposed by the opposition United Left (ZL) party, appeared
headed for likely approval after the ruling coalition's senior Miro
Cerar Party announced its support of the text, along with other
center-left parties.
"This amendment defines marriage as a life-long commitment of two
persons, regardless of their sex, eliminating the discriminating
situation in force up to now," Matej T. Vatovec, a ZL legislator told
lawmakers when introducing the bill.
Center-right opposition parties are hostile to the text, saying it will
enable same-sex couples to adopt children and will undermine the
traditional family values.
