Chip Sarafin Of Arizona State Comes Out Gay; Michael Sam Tweets Support

Arizona State offensive lineman Edward “Chip” Sarafin has come out gay.
The announcement makes Sarafin the first openly gay active Division 1 football player.

Sarafin told gay sports glossy Compete that he started coming out to teammates last spring.
“It was really personal to me, and it benefited my peace of mind greatly,” the fifth-year senior said.
Sarafin, who has yet to play in a game, graduated from Arizona State with a degree in biomedical engineering last year and is currently enrolled in the school's master's program.
Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson issued a statement of support.
“The entire athletics department is extremely proud of Chip and is unequivocally supportive of him,” Anderson said.
Michael Sam, the NFL's first openly gay player, also tweeted encouragement: “Congratulations Chip Sarafin for having the courage to be yourself. Wishing you and your teammates much success this season. #courage2014.”
