In a recent study, Bisexual men were more likely to report depression, suicidality, substance use, and incarceration than gay men.
Bisexual men with current female partners had greater odds of unprotected sex,
exchange sex, and STI's.
Bisexual men with male partners in the past year had
greater odds of multiple or concurrent partners in the past year.
HIV
risk and psychosocial vulnerability factors are elevated among Bisexual men.
HIV risk reduction interventions should address this and heterogeneity of sexual partnerships among Bisexual men.
In an earlier study, it was revealed, bisexual men were more likely to be in heteronormative relationships (88%) while Bisexual females were almost evenly split.
The study also reported that Bisexual males were more likely to keep same sex pairings a secret from female partners and they were less likely to use condoms or get HIV testing.
This study shows, Bisexual men are more likely to be closeted than gay men and in my opinion demonstrates, we as a community, have a lot of work to do in getting the bisexual male community to come out and be accepted not only within the LGBT community but in the hetero community as well.
The double edged sword here though, is Bisexual men have to want this as well..perhaps less condemnation on both sides (gay vs bisexual) and a more open discussion about these issues, would benefit both communities.
