A US Christian conservative is appalled the Stonewall Inn might be a federal historical monument.
Last week it was announced President Barack Obama is preparing to name the Greenwich Village neighborhood bar, and park across the street, as part of the National Park Service.
In 1969 the Stonewall riots occurred outside of the bar, an event
considered as the spark of the modern LGBT equality movement.
Yesterday, 6 May, evangelical leader Franklin Graham used Facebook to express his dismay.
‘A monument to sin,’ Graham wailed, according to the Washington Post.
‘That’s unbelievable. War heroes deserve a monument, our nation’s
founding fathers deserve a monument, people who have helped to make
America strong deserve a monument — but a monument to sin?’
After disparaging the local politicians supporting the move, the preacher begs the president to back away.
‘I
can’t believe how far our country has digressed. I hope that the
president will reconsider. Flaunting sin is a dangerous move.’
The CEO of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is a constant critic of LGBT rights. He railed against Bruce Springsteen when the performer canceled a North Carolina concert to protest the state’s HB2 law.
‘A
nation embracing sin and bowing at the feet of godless secularism and
political correctness is not progress,’ the preacher tweeted.
In a 2015 October interview, he denounced Obama and marriage equality.
‘Same-sex
marriage is a sin against God,’ Graham maintained. ‘God made us male
and female, and then to say that marriage is between two men or two
women, this is sin and the Obama administration is celebrating sin and
they are pushing sin.’
Though the Bible never states that homosexuality is a sin, it does however have a lot to say about self righteous people passing judgement on others and bearing false witness.
Maybe what we really need to do, is reconsider the tax exempt status of politically active televangelist.
