An errant comma in the Republican Party
of Texas platform implies that the majority of Texans are gay.
“Homosexuality is a chosen behavior
that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truths that has been
ordained by God in the Bible, recognized by our nations founders, and
shared by the majority of Texans,” reads the plank, approved
earlier this month by delegates at the party's convention.
Lone
Star Q asked on Twitter whether the wording pointed to the
sexuality of most Texans.
“In response, grammarians pointed out
that placement of the final comma in the plank could lead to
understanding it to mean that homosexuality is a chosen behavior
shared by the majority of Texans,” Reuters
wrote.
Other problems noted was the lack of an
apostrophe on “nations” and that by using “has been,” the
statement suggests that homosexuality has been ordained by God.
The Republican Party of Texas has
previously stated its opposition to gay rights, including marriage
rights for gay and lesbian couples.
