Mitt Romney's opposition to equal
marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples is not heartfelt, openly
gay candidate Brian Sims has said.
Sims is set to become Pennsylvania's
first openly gay state legislator. After winning his Democratic
primary in April – unseating longtime incumbent Rep. Babette
Josephs of Philadelphia – Sims, a policy attorney and civil rights
advocate, is running unopposed.
During an appearance on cabler Current
TV's The War Room, Sims was asked his take on Romney's “ever
evolving stance on marriage equality.”
“Do I think that he's spending a lot
more time trying to figure out what polls say about this, than trying
to figure out what he himself feels about this? Yeah, absolutely,”
Sims said.
Guest host John Fugelsang agreed,
adding that he believes Romney “pretends to be a homophobe to
pander for homophobic votes.”
“Isn't that a bit worse than just
being a plain old bigot?” Fugelsang asked.
“Absolutely,” Sims replied. “My
guess is that behind closed doors, Mitt Romney would tell you that
he's had gay friends, gay family, gay co-workers, and we all know
that he has. And my guess is that he probably treated them with the
utmost respect.”
