Catholic League President Bill Donohue
has described marrying for love as “one of the most bizarre ideas
in the whole world.”
Donohue, an ardent opponent of gay
marriage, made his comments during an appearance on cabler Current's
Viewpoints.
“This idea of two men getting married
is the most bizarre idea in human history,” Donohue said.
“Why is that?” host John Fugelsang
asked.
“Well, can we name of a single
society or civilization in the history of the world up until
yesterday which ever entertained this?”
“But how is that against the
teachings of Jesus Christ in any way?”
“Christians have an obligation to
follow – particularly Catholics – natural law. That means, for
example, everyone knows in their right mind that the whole purpose of
marriage is to have a family. It's not about making people happy.
It's not about love.”
“Marriage has nothing to do with
love.”
“Sure it does,” Fugelsang
responded. “In this society it does.”
“It's one of the most bizarre ideas
in the whole world. The idea that you fall in love to get married.
Usually it's a form of duty,” Donohue said.

A Catholic talking about 'natural law'? Tell it to all the victims who have suffered the abuse of that 'un-natural' institution. Would Jesus even set foot in the blood-stained halls of the Vatican? Pity those that worship in a house of rotten wood because the truth is like a gathering cloud that nothing can stop.
He is correct you know... Marriage is about creating a family. Otherwise why would the government even care to get involved, other than to help ensure that children are created and raised in a stable environment. It's not about the state "blessing" a special union. Why would they care at all about that?
Um, I have one problem with your assertion...
He isn't correct and neither are you.
Those who oppose gay marriage just don't get it.
Marriage in the US and throughout the world, legally has never been about procreation.
I defy you or anyone else to show me where it is a written prerequisite that a marriage is solely about reproduction!
People marry for love and to openly display a commitment too each other.
In ages before, yes marriage was used to accomplish many things, but in modern times, it has become an affirmation of how two people feel for each other.
