Another Westboro Baptist Church Defector
Zach Phelps-Roper has spokenabout his decision to break away from the Westboro Baptist Church and reconnect with other family members excommunicated from the notorious anti-gay church.
23-year-old Zach moved out of the family compound on 20 February, with the help of cousins who had already left the church.
He is the fourth of his ten siblings to leave the church, now lead by his mother Shirley Phelps-Roper - the daughter of church founder Fred Phelps
Zach told the Topeka Capital-Journal that some of his earliest memories were taking part in church pickets as a small child, but he had begun to question his church’s teachings around his 18th birthday.
He also said his interactions with LGBTI people since leaving the church had been a shockingly pleasant surprise.
‘After I left the church I met some homosexual men who were very kind to me, and I was taken aback,’ Zach said.
‘I met this guy at Olive Garden one night with my sister and he offered to pay for my entire dinner and I was so taken aback… I was like, “I don’t know what to say,” so I said, “No, no, let me do that, I’ll just pay for that, I’ve got it.”’
‘It was so funny because the very next day I saw him… I went out for a very moderate drinking [session] with my friends and family and … he just came up to me and just kindly got me one of these fruity kind of drinks that I like and he just said “Here you go man,” and just walked off – he didn’t even expect a thank you.’
Zach also shed some light on his grandfather’s mentality in his final weeks and on why he may have been excommunicated by his own church in his final days, saying he seemed to have become more moderate in his views towards the end.
‘When I was in the church they had described him as being someone who was manipulative and had mistreated other people in the church,’ Zach said.
‘[So] I was very ambivalent, I wasn’t sure what to think of my grandpa after he passed.’

Rick Santorum Dodges Fox News' Neil Cavuto's Questions On Marriage Equality
Former presidential candidate Rick
Santorum on Wednesday evaded questions on marriage equality during an
appearance on Fox News.
Santorum, who is promoting his new book
Blue Collar Conservatives, told host Neil Cavuto that people
in a stable marriage generally fare better economically.
“Let's say if your mom and dad are
the same sex,” Cavuto
started, “is that a stable environment?”
“Well, I'd rather argue the issue as
to whether we should be promoting, I believe we should be, promoting
the institution of marriage of men and women staying together and
raising children,” Santorum responded.
“Would you apply the same for men and
men staying together? Or women and women staying together?”
“Here's what I would say, that what
we need to do is have men – the father and mother of the children
raise those children. And that means a man and woman bringing to a
child what a man and woman can bring. And that's what we should be
focused on.”
“What about the gay couple who
adopts?” Cavuto pressed.
“If states want to do what they want
to do, I think we need to focus on the vast majority of the people
who are going to be in man and woman relationships raising children
and reclaim those relationships and try to nurture … How about
promoting the dignity and value of marriage of mothers and fathers
raising [children]?”
As early as last year, Santorum, a
vocal opponent of gay rights, hinted at a second bid for the White
House in 2016.
So, I have an idea, instead of discussing the validity of heterosexual marriage, lets work on tax restructuring where gay men and women don't have to pay for tax breaks, which can add up to thousands of dollars for each child.
If we don't get marriage equality, then we shouldn't be forced to supplement your marriages, unions and children with our tax dollars.

UK Will Not Sign EU Declaration Against Homophobia
A senior Whitehall source told the newspaper that the Tories feared that working with Europe on the summit would further alienate their eurosceptic right wing, already angered by equal marriage.
The declaration against homophobia will be signed by 11 EU countries, but despite partly being drafted by British civil servants, the UK will not sign.
GOP Candidate Opposed To Marriage Equality Denies He's Gay, Is Former Drag Queen
A Republican candidate for the North
Carolina Senate has denied claims he's gay and once worked as a drag
queen.
Randy Duggins, co-owner of the
now-shuttered Club Odyssey nightclub in Winston-Salem, told reporters
that Steve Wiles was gay when he worked as a female impersonator at
his gay club roughly a decade ago.
“He is Mona Sinclair,” Duggins told
the News
& Record. “That's
definitely him. I have no ax to grind against him. I just think
he's a liar.”
Wiles at first denied both claims,
answering “no” when asked whether he's gay and saying he's not
Mona Sinclair.
With only days to go before the May 6
GOP primary, Wiles, a real estate agent, gave a tacit admission.
“I have already apologized to the
people who matter most to me for the things I did when I was young,”
Wiles said this week without elaborating.
At the website of the Miss Gay America
Pageant, Steven
Wiles is listed as Mona Sinclair on a webpage that has been
removed but is still accessible via Google's cache. According to the
webpage, pageant officials suspended Sinclair for “conduct
unbecoming to a promoter of the Miss Gay America Pageant system.”
In 2012, Wiles advocated for passage of
North Carolina's constitutional amendment defining marriage as a
between a man and a woman. According to the News & Record,
he still supports the ban.
Why does everyone keep assuming this guy is gay just because he dressed up like a woman?

It's good he got *outed* as a political repugnant bigot, but then again, the simple fact he's a Republican should have already alerted the gay community he wasn't worth voting for...I certainly need no other reason!

A Justice For All
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg has said the public reaction to a ruling striking down a key
provision of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has been positive.
The high court ruled last June that the
federal government could not deny federal benefits to gay and lesbian
couples married in states which recognize such unions, currently 17
plus the District of Columbia. The case was brought by Edith
Windsor, an elderly widow required to pay $363,000 in estate taxes
because the IRS would not recognize her marriage to another woman.
“The reaction to Windsor I
think has been positive from the public,” Ginsburg answered when
asked by The
Wall Street Journal whether she was surprised by the growing
support for marriage equality. “People could understand the
injustice of the way she was treated.”
“I haven't seen a social change that
rapid in – ever. It's just great that people who for years have
been disguising what they were are now free to be what they are.”
“I'm sure you know that years and
years ago Justice [Lewis] Powell said there was never a homosexual
clerk at the Supreme Court. Of course there were. And he had some,”
she said.
Almost as soon as Windsor was
announced, marriage equality proponents started filing dozens of
challenges to state marriage bans.
“I think it was an inevitable next
step on the part of people who were trying to promote a greater
understanding,” Ginsburg said of judges who have cited Windsor
in their rulings
invalidating state bans.
