Nicolas Sarkozy Says He Has Evolved On Marriage Equality

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said he no longer wants to repeal gay marriage in a new book, that many see as the first move in his expected re-election campaign.
In La France pour la vie, published Monday (25 January), Sarkozy said unmarrying gay couples would be ‘unjust, cruel and also legally impossible.’
Sarkozy said while he had misgivings about the ambiguities of the ‘Taubira law,’ ‘there will be no question of unmarrying married couples or going back on the principle of homosexual marriage.’
‘I do no wish to legislate that again because the the priority must be to bring the French people together,’ he wrote.
‘This is a point on which, I assume, I have evolved.’
Sarkozy had previously said the gay marriage law, which came into effect in May 2013, ‘should be rewritten from the ground up.’
Anti-gay marriage group Manif pour tous were quick to denounce the ‘instability’ of Sarkozy’s convictions, and requested a meeting with the former president to ‘understand his motivations.’

Top Republican And Democrat Lawmakers In West Virginia Speak Out Against Anti-Gay Religious Freedoms Bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a historic moment, both Democrat and Republican lawmakers have joined together in voicing their support for LGBT nondiscrimination in a bipartisan video produced by Fairness West Virginia, the statewide LGBT advocacy organization.

The video is called “LGBT Nondiscrimination Is A Nonpartisan Issue: Hear From Legislators In Their Own Words” and showcases members of the West Virginia Legislature including Senate Majority Leader Mitch Carmichael and Senate Minority Leader Jeffrey V. Kessler, Senate Judiciary Chairman Charlie S. Trump, House Minority Leader Timothy Miley, and Delegate Saira Blair, the state’s youngest legislator, as well as five other lawmakers.

“Fairness West Virginia is excited to showcase that leaders and the next generation of leaders from both parties are unequivocally speaking out in favor of nondiscrimination for all West Virginians including LGBT Mountaineers,” says Andrew Schneider, Executive Director of Fairness West Virginia. “This video demonstrates that it is no longer politically advantageous for members of either party to support discrimination of any kind.”

There is, however, a concerted effort by The Family Policy Council, an outside lobbying group, to disguise discrimination against the LGBT community in West Virginia in the name of religious freedom. “The idea that religious freedom and nondiscrimination are in conflict is simply not true,” says Schneider. “We hear time and time again from West Virginians that personal religious conviction is in fact one of the strongest foundations for supporting LGBT nondiscrimination.”

Gavin MacIntosh, half of the youngest same-sex kiss in television history, has told gay glossy The Advocate that his role on ABC Family's The Fosters has made an impact.

The drama revolves around a lesbian couple who are coping with raising five children.

Jude (played by 15-year-old Hayden Byerly) is the youngest son in the family at 13. Connor (MacIntosh) came to Jude's rescue when he was being bullied. In an episode broadcast in March, Jude confronted Connor about their relationship and Connor responded by kissing Jude.

“I really wasn't aware that my character could make such an impact on viewers,” MacIntosh, 16, said. “The kiss was very, very important. It was a groundbreaking thing, and I think it showed the two characters' relationship more emotionally than sexually.”

“There are a few television shows that are out there that portray gay characters, but I think the reason why Connor’s relationship is so different is because of the age,” he said. “No one speaks for the young LGBT community, or if they do, it’s a very minimal group. I’m glad that I’m the person that gets to be able to do that.”

The role, MacIntosh said, had made his aware of the bullying LGBT kids face.

“More people are grasping that it's not cool to discriminate and bully someone,” MacIntosh said. “We really, really have to change.”

Australian Government Vows Crack Down On Conversion Therapy

The Victorian government has vowed to crack down on so-called gay conversion therapists who claim to be able to ‘cure’ homosexuality.
The Australian state announced plans to introduce new legislation to parliament later this year that will create a Health Complaints Commissioner role, with the power to investigate or ban unregistered practitioners making unproven claims, according to local news reports.
Current legislation only allows for registered practitioners to be investigated, leaving those with dubious qualifications to practice without consequence.

‘We have zero tolerance for any person purporting to be able to ‘convert’ gay people through medical or therapeutic means,’ Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy said in a statement.

Any attempts to make people feel uncomfortable with their own sexuality is completely unacceptable.’

Many former ‘ex-gay’ ministries have been accused of subjecting participants to starvation, exorcism and brainwashing, News.com.au reports.
The Age said that news of the government’s plans come a week after The Sunday Age reported on the growing push behind the scenes to combat the ‘ex-gay movement’, which ‘essentially views homosexuality as a sin and remains an insidious part of evangelical church culture in Australia.’
It also said that it is not entirely known to what extent conversion therapy is still being used, either through religious organisations attempting to ‘pray away the gay’ or less formal structures.
As public scrutiny has increased over the years, conversion culture has since gone ‘underground’ with practitioners organizing   and linking up via support groups, conferences, websites and online resources.
Victorian Greens MP Sam Hibbins has called for a parliamentary inquiry into gay conversion counselling services.
‘It’s unacceptable that gay conversion therapy is still occurring today in Victoria,’ Hibbins said.
‘A parliamentary inquiry into gay conversion therapy would shine a light into the dark recesses of organisations where this practice is still occurring.’

Although it faces fierce opposition in the Catholic country, it is expected to pass.
However supporters of measures for civil unions or same-sex marriage, say they fear amendments will be added to sabotage or water down the legislation.
Italy remains as the last Western European country which has no legal recognition for cohabiting same-sex couples.

Justice Minister Andrea Orlando has said Italy must introduce same-sex civil unions to be compliant with the Strasbourg court.

Pope Francis on Friday reiterated the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to gay marriage as Italian lawmakers debate a gay-inclusive civil unions bill.

The Italian Senate is expected next week to vote on a bill that would recognize the unions of gay couples. Opponents claim that civil partnerships will open the door to marriage and adoption for gay couples.

“There can be no confusion between the family God wants and any other type of union,” Pope Francis is quoted by Reuters as telling members of the Vatican court that rules on marriage annulments.

“The family, founded on indissoluble matrimony that unites and allows procreation, is part of God's dream and that of his church for the salvation of humanity,” he added.

PD Senator Monica Cirinna, the bill's author, told reporters this week that the Vatican's position on marriage has at times “cast a shadow” on the debate.
