Italian PM Matteo Renzi Strips For The Vatican

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will drop adoption rights from a civil unions bill in order to push the controversial legislation through parliament.
Senators from his Democratic Party backed the proposal at a meeting Tuesday (23 February).
‘Between “everything never” and “nothing today,” it’s better to do a little piece now’ Renzi said in a radio interview ahead of the discussion.
He added that he hoped the Senate would approve the amended bill later this week before sending it immediately to the lower Chamber of Deputies.
Renzi, who is starting his third year in office, had promised to pass the bill by the end of last year, but his plans were frustrated by repeated challenges from within parliament and the Catholic church.
Last week, pro-Vatican senators in the Democratic Party and a coalition party led by his interior minister stalled a vote on the bill over a provision that gave limited adoption rights over the gay partner’s biological child.
LGBTi group Rainbow Families said the decision to remove the adoption rights amounted to the ’emptying out’ of a bill that was already a modest compromise.
Italy is the only major country left in Western Europe that does not recognize either civil unions or gay marriage.

City leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday approved a proposal to add sexual orientation and gender identity to its anti-discrimination ordinance.

After three hours of debate that was, at times, heated, Charlotte City Council voted 7-4 in favor of the measure.

Republican Governor Pat McCrory, who served 20 years in Charlotte politics, including 14 years as mayor, promised “immediate” action by the state legislature, which has the power to overrule the council's decisions.

The ordinance prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in public accommodations, vehicles for hire and in government contracting.

Opponents of the measure said that they feared men posing as women would gain access to women's restrooms.

“I'm not scared of transgenders, but sexual predators will see this as a chance for fresh victims,” resident Pam Burton is quoted as saying by The Charlotte Observer. “If one child becomes a victim through this, shame on all of you.”

Other opponents simply mocked transgender people. One man dressed up as a king and proclaimed that he identifies as “gender royal.” “Anyone who does not bow and call me your highness shall be fined,” the king said as he waved a scepter. One woman described transgender people as people who think they are a bird or a cat.

Supporters carried signs which read “Facts Not Fear.”

A similar measured failed last year, but a new mayor and a change in the makeup of the council favored passage.

A Christian Who Is Trying To Make A Difference

A Michigan pastor is sleeping outside in a tent to protest the United Methodist Church's opposition to LGBT rights.

The Rev. Michael Tupper of Parchment United Methodist Church near Kalamazoo started his protest on November 30. He said that he'll continue sleeping in the tent for 175 consecutive nights.

“It's a symbol of how our denomination, the United Methodist Church, is responding to LGBT persons and pushing them outside the church,” Tupper said. He added that LGBT persons “are being forced out of our church and into the cold.”

He's also taken his protest on the road, pitching his tent in front of United Methodist conference headquarters in Indianapolis and Madison, Wisconsin.

“My ultimate goal is to raise awareness of the problems of discrimination and to inspire people to make a change to allow for LGBT persons to be married in our church and to allow LGBT persons to serve as pastors in our church,” Tupper has said.

The church's official policy states that homosexuality is “incompatible with Christian teaching.”

A telecom company is threatening to relocate after Georgia lawmakers approved a bill that protects opponents of marriage equality.

The Georgia House last week unanimously approved House Bill 757, the Pastor Protection Act, which protects clergy from being forced to marry gay and lesbian couples. On its way to the Senate floor, a committee amended the bill to include Senate Bill 284, which would “prohibit discriminatory action against a person who believes, speaks or acts in accordance with a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such marriage.”

On Friday, the revised bill cleared the Senate 38-14 after three hours of debate that was, at times, heated.

The Republican-led House must agree with the changes before it heads to Governor Nathan Deal's desk for his signature.

The group Georgia Unites Against Discrimination said on its Facebook page that the bill would “allow tax-payer funded organizations to legally discriminate against LGBT Georgians.”

Decatur-based telecom company 373K tweeted: “We are very saddened by the Georgia Senate which passed #HB757 also known as #FADA. It's time to relocate.”

Kelvin Williams, the company's co-founder, told The New Civil Rights Movement that the bill does not embody “the message of Christ.”

“It's sad our state government wants to take us back in time,” he said. “If you're not a white married Christian heterosexual, prepare to be persecuted.”

The Kentucky Senate on Thursday approved a bill which seeks to establish separate marriage license forms for gay couples.

One form would list the “bride” and “groom” while another would note “first party” and “second party.”

The bill also would require couples to list their gender and would remove the name of the county clerk who issued the license, a nod to Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who became a Christian celebrity fighting to keep her office from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

Last year, Governor Matt Bevin issued an executive order to remove the clerk's name from the form.

Republican State Senator John Schickel said that removing the words “bride” and “groom” was disrespectful to heterosexual couples.

“Quite frankly, it's almost disrespectful to the traditional family,” Schickel is quoted as saying by the AP. “That why, wisely, we decided to have two forms. That has nothing to do with bigotry. Nothing to do with discrimination. It has to do with the vast majority of Kentuckians that respect traditional marriage.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) criticized the move as “unequal treatment under the law.”

“Separate forms for gay and lesbian Kentuckians constitute unequal treatment under the law,” ACLU of Kentucky Executive Director Michael Aldridge said. “Pure and simple, this bill is motivated by the desire to accommodate discrimination against same-sex couples.”

The bill now heads to the Kentucky House, which is controlled by Democrats.
