Paul Ryan has for the first time
weighed in on the first anniversary of repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't
Tell,” telling a Florida network that “It's done.”
The GOP vice presidential candidate
said he opposed repeal of the law which for 18 years banned gay and
bisexual troops from serving openly but added that undoing the change
would harm gay troops.
“I talked to a lot of good friends of
mine who are combat leaders in the theater and they just didn't think
the timing of this was right to do this when our troops were in the
middle of harm's way in combat,” Ryan told NBC affiliate WPTV.
“Now that it's done, we should not
reverse it.”
“I think that would be a step in the
wrong direction because people have already disclosed themselves.
So, I think the issue is past us. It's done. And, I think we need
to move on,” he
added.
Ryan's views reflect those of Mitt
Romney, who has also said he was only opposed to the change's timing.
