A Lie Told Often Enough...

Every time I turn on the TV and *try* to watch the news, invariably I get to see some hyper religious conservative spouting how this country is doomed unless we get back to the founding fathers *vision* for America.
It's always the same, they spew some Biblical verse followed by their contention the USA was founded on Christian principles and we need too return to those *traditional* family values put forth by our founding fathers.
People like Jay Sekulow who works for Pat Robertsons American Center for Law and Justice.
Like most of these pseudo religious terrorist, they prey on the weak by pummeling them with doom and gloom then offer them a morsel of hope if they give them money to help finance their moral crusade against anyone who doesn't share their puritanical beliefs.
Of course, it's all a lie and the very foundation they would have one believe in, is also a lie.
Though many of the founding fathers were Christian, they also strongly believed in religious freedom and yes, dare I say it, freedom from religion and religious persecution.
I've quoted Thomas Jefferson here before, today, I'll quote the co-author of the Constitution, our 4th President, James Madison:

"Experience witnesseth that ecclesiastical establishments, instead of maintaining the purity and efficacy of religion, have had a contrary operation. During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."

Yes Mr. Sekulow, I think I shall "Share Truth."
