LGBT members of a guerrilla group are fighting back against ISIS in Syria.
After three years of men being thrown off buildings and beheaded after accused of being gay, a sub-group has been founded that has one goal: ‘Faggots kill fascists’.
Its name: The Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army, or TQILA (said Tequila).
It is part of the International Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Forces (IRPGF), an anarchist movement.
Announced on Twitter, the group posted a picture showing volunteer freedom fighters holding up their group’s message, their logo (an anarchist symbol, a gun on a pink background), and the rainbow Pride flag in Raqqa.
The Pride flag was made by the group in Rojava, an autonomous region in northern Syria.
‘These Faggots Kill Fascists!’ they said.
‘We shoot back! The Black & Pink and Rainbow flag fly in Raqqa. #Queers smashing the Caliphate.’
An IRPGF spokesperson said the group is made up of ‘many genders’.
‘Our forces have engaged the enemy in multiple battles,’ they said.
‘TQILA’s members have watched in horror as fascist and extremist forces around the world have attacked the queer community and murdered countless of our community members citing that they are ‘ill’, ‘sick’ and ‘unnatural’,’ they said in a statement.
‘The images of gay men being thrown off roofs and stoned to death by Daesh was something we could not idly watch.’
The group notes ISIS is not the only group which kills LGBT and non-binary people motivated by religion, and there are many religious people welcoming of queer people.
‘Our commitment to struggling against authority, patriarchy, oppressive heteronormativity, queer/homophobia and transphobia are strengthened by the revolutionary advances and gains of the Kurdish women’s struggle,’ they add.
‘It is this necessity and desire to strengthen the gains of the women’s revolution while advancing the queer struggle that has motivated queer comrades of the IRPGF to form TQILA’.
‘Queer liberation!’ the statement ends. ‘Shoot back! These faggots kill fascists!’.
Since its rise to prominence in Iraq in mid-2014, ISIS has released many propaganda images and footage of the group murdering gay and bisexual men.
After blindfolding them and taking them to the roof a high building, they are thrown off. If they survive, a crowd stones them to death.
Other LGBT people have been beheaded, maimed, tortured and burned alive.
ISIS have described gay people as the ‘worst of creatures’.
Kurdish forces treat men and women equally in its ranks, and also have all-women Kurdish units.
The Kurdish-Arab coalition, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, is fighting back against ISIS. The extremist Islamic group have lost a large percentage of their territory in recent months.
And while it is unclear how large TQILA’s numbers are, the new battalion could give the victims of extremists the liberation they badly need.
