It's Sunday...Time To Worship

A Lie Told Often Enough...

Every time I turn on the TV and *try* to watch the news, invariably I get to see some hyper religious conservative spouting how this country is doomed unless we get back to the founding fathers *vision* for America.
It's always the same, they spew some Biblical verse followed by their contention the USA was founded on Christian principles and we need too return to those *traditional* family values put forth by our founding fathers.
People like Jay Sekulow who works for Pat Robertsons American Center for Law and Justice.
Like most of these pseudo religious terrorist, they prey on the weak by pummeling them with doom and gloom then offer them a morsel of hope if they give them money to help finance their moral crusade against anyone who doesn't share their puritanical beliefs.
Of course, it's all a lie and the very foundation they would have one believe in, is also a lie.
Though many of the founding fathers were Christian, they also strongly believed in religious freedom and yes, dare I say it, freedom from religion and religious persecution.
I've quoted Thomas Jefferson here before, today, I'll quote the co-author of the Constitution, our 4th President, James Madison:

"Experience witnesseth that ecclesiastical establishments, instead of maintaining the purity and efficacy of religion, have had a contrary operation. During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."

Yes Mr. Sekulow, I think I shall "Share Truth."

Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Constitution's Genius Shines In Gay Marriage Decisions

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday told an audience in Philadelphia that the Constitution's genius shines in its gay marriage decisions.
Ginsburg, who recently officiated over the wedding of a gay couple, said that equality has always been central to the Constitution.

“So I see the genius of our Constitution, and of our society, is how much more embracive we have become than we were at the beginning,” the AP quoted Ginsburg as saying during an appearance at the National Constitution Center.
In June, the high court released two decisions related gay nuptials. It stuck down a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which prohibited federal agencies from recognizing the legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples. Without DOMA, married gay couples can receive federal recognition and benefits regardless of whether they live in a state where such unions are allowed. The second ruling paved the way for the return of gay nuptials in California, making it the 13th state to legalized marriage for gay couples.
The DOMA decision has also provoked a flurry of activity in the states – from an attempt to ban such unions in Indiana to lawsuits filed in nearly a dozen states.
Ginsburg, 80, gave no hint that she was preparing to retire from the bench anytime soon.

Russian Gay Activist's Plea: 'Get Us the Hell Out of Here'

Masha Gessen is a Moscow-based writer, journalist and activist who's been speaking out in recent months on Russia's anti-gay propaganda law. Though she's an American citizen, she's from Russia and has lived in Russia for many years, raising three children with her lesbian partner, a Russian citizen. Gessen hoped Western pressure in recent months would help change the course of Russia's crackdown on its LGBT citizens, but now she believes that that's not going to happen, and that it's time for Russian LGBT people to flee the country to escape what she says has now become "all-out war" against LGBT people in Russia. And she's calling on the United States to allow political asylum for LGBT Russians, and for LGBT activists here to focus on making that happen.

Southern Baptists Bar Military Chaplains From Performing Gay Weddings

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has barred its military chaplains from performing, attending or supporting weddings for gay and lesbian couples.
The North American Mission Board (NAMB), an arm of the SBC, released the guidelines last week in response to the Department of Defense's recent decision to recognize such marriages and extend benefits to the spouses of gay servicemembers, the AP reported.
Chaplains are also prohibited from offering “any kind of relationship training or retreat, on or off of a military installation, that would give the appearance of accepting the homosexual lifestyle or sexual wrongdoing.”
The Tennessee-based SBC provides the largest share of active-duty military chaplains.
Doug Carver, a retired Army major general and executive director of NAMB's Evangelism Group, said in an accompanying statement that SBC chaplains “want to uphold the authority and relevancy of Scripture while continuing to serve in a very diverse setting.”
Chaplains are also not to “lead or participate in a worship service” with a chaplain, volunteer or contractor who “personally practices or affirms a homosexual lifestyle or such conduct.”
Here's a simple solution for the Pentagon...kick out all Baptist ministers.
Military Chaplains can be called upon to perform in the field for all denominations, if they won't perform their duties for ALL service men and women, then they have no business being there!

Obama Directs V.A. To Provide Equal Benefits To Married Gay Couples

The Obama administration on Wednesday announced that it will stop enforcement of a law that blocks the spouses of gay veterans from receiving equal benefits.
In a letter to congressional leaders, Attorney General Eric Holder said that President Barack Obama had directed the executive branch to stop enforcing the law. Holder said that he had made the recommendation to the president.
The action comes less than a week after a federal judge in California ruled unconstitutional the portion of the U.S. Code that defines a spouse for the purpose of veterans' benefits to be a person of the opposite sex.
(Related: Judge rules VA can't deny veterans' benefits to married gay couple.)
“Decisions by the Executive not to enforce federal laws are appropriately rare,” Holder said in his letter. “Nevertheless, the unique circumstances presented here warrant non-enforcement.”
Holder noted the Supreme Court decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), saying that the provisions in the veterans benefits law ran afoul of the court's June ruling.
“Indeed, following the Supreme Court's decision in Windsor,” which struck down DOMA, “the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group of the U.S. House of Representatives (BLAG) withdrew from pending litigation challenging the constitutionality of the Title 38 provisions,” Holder told Congress.
The AP reported that the decision does not apply to gay couples who live in a state that does not recognize their marriages. A spokesman for the Department of Veterans Affairs said the issue is under review.
“There's no reason to treat veterans who live in one state differently than veterans who happen to live in a state that doesn't recognize them,” Michael Cole-Schwartz, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest LGBT advocate, told the AP.
