Meeting over the weekend in Las Vegas,
organizers of WordlPride announced that New York City will play host
the global celebration in 2019.
WorldPride, an ambitious touring Gay
Pride festival, will be held in conjunction with the 50th
anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the 1969 riots credited with
sparking the modern gay rights movement.
David Schneider, director of NYC
Pride's Stonewall 50, praised the announcement.
“The Stonewall Uprising is considered
the mot significant event that ignited the modern LGBT rights
movement, so it makes perfect sense to bring WorldPride to the
birthplace of Pride in 2019. We are grateful that our fellow Pride
organizers from across the globe have chosen New York City for this
momentous occasion.”
Previous host cities have included
Rome, Jerusalem, London and Toronto. The next WorldPride will be
head in Madrid in 2017.
New York City is the first U.S. city
selected to host WorldPride.
