Republican presidential candidate Marco
Rubio on Monday told a gay married man in New Hampshire that if he
disagrees with his opposition to marriage equality, then he should
change the law.
According to The
New York Times, Timothy Kierstead, 50, was seated at a table
in a crowded diner in Manchester with his mother and husband when the
candidate walked up behind him.
“Why do you want to put me back in
the closet?” he asked, a reference to Rubio's opposition to
marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.
“I don't,” Rubio replied. “You
can live any way you want.”
Kierstead criticized Rubio's stance,
saying it amounted to him declaring that “we don't matter.”
“No, I just believe marriage is
between one man and one woman. I think that's what the law should
be. And if you don't agree, you should have the law changed by a
legislature,” Rubio replied.
After Kierstead replied that the law
had changed, Rubio told him that he respects his view and walked
away.
“Typical politician,” Kierstead
fumed. “Walk away.”
At the same diner, a 92-year-old woman
asked Rubio whether Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina was gay.
“No,” Rubio answered with a chuckle.
I would have had a better follow up, I would have asked him why my civil rights should be up for a majority vote from a bunch of homophobic, religion pandering bigots.
