Debate Tuesday on a bill that for the
first time would recognize gay and lesbian couples with civil unions
stalled in the Italian Senate.
Three hours into the raucous debate,
Senate President Pietro Grasso cut off discussion until Wednesday
morning.
“We won't permit stadium chants,”
Grasso is quoted as saying by The New York Times, a reference
to the fiery rhetoric of lawmakers debating the bill.
Italy is the only major Western country
that offers gay couples no recognition.
Opponents of the bill say that a
provision allowing a spouse to adopt the biological children of his
or her partner would lead to surrogacy, a practice which is banned in
Italy.
Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin
earlier this month described surrogacy as “ultra-prostitution.”
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has
strongly backed the bill.
