From Pink News:
Merkel, who earlier this year ruled out same-sex marriage in Germany, has now said legally she supports it but that she would want it to be called something else.
The chancellor answered questions in an online community from German YouTube star Florian Mundt, known as LeFloid on the website, as part of the ‘Gut Leben’ [good living] campaign.
“I’m someone who is very supportive of us eliminating all
discrimination.” She said when asked for her stance on marriage
equality.
“We have come a long way; when I remember, 25 years ago,
many people didn’t dare to say that they are gay or lesbian. Luckily we
overcame this; you can enter a partnership, a civil partnership.” Merkel
said.
“For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living
together. That is my concept, but I support civil partnerships.” She
continued. “I support us not discriminating against them when it comes
to taxes, and to remove any other discrimination wherever we may find
it.”
Mundt accused Merkel of wanting to keep marriage between
same-sex couples and heterosexual couples separate, although it would be
the same on paper.
“For me, there is still a difference. It’s not the same, but
they (same-sex couples) want the same. Everything else is an exclusion
for me.” She said.
Merkel said that people, including herself, have to accept
that there are different opinions on the matter, as the opinions in her
own party as well as in the German government differ, but, “you’ll have
to endure that for a while.”
“I don’t want discrimination and (I want) equality, but I make a difference at some point.” She explained
“So you could say: no to discrimination, but we’ll keep differentiating between the two.” Her interviewer countered.
“No discrimination.” Merkel answered.
“Marriage as a man and a woman living together.” She concluded.
I think Merkels presence on this young mans show, was merely a PR attempt to make her seem *with it* and thus able to relate to a younger audience.
The truth is, Florian missed a great opportunity to make her squirm, but he pussied out.
Truth is, she's a bigot, had absolutely nothing to do with what equality gays do have in Germany but as a right wing religious zealot, is more than happy to take credit for the crumbs she and her dullard conservative movement allow gay people to have, all while projecting the attitude: "If you don't like it, go fuck yourself."
She is clearly stating she determines what is fair, not the voters, not the people she represents and she can give a rats ass about her citizens equality.
She'd be a perfect fit with the US GOP...at this point, what's one more Republican candidate?

you have to cut some people some slack Ulf
Mrs Merkel is the most powerful person in Europe (well, no, Obama is, but you know what I mean). She appears on YouTube to admit that she is struggling with it, but that the best she can offer right now is differentiation without discrimination
come on now. We all know that politically some things have to come in steps, otherwise you don't get them at all. The same-sex marriage thing is having a domino effect around the world. If the biggest, richest country in Europe moves itself into an ultimately meaningless half-way house position then more dominoes will fall. (Perhaps Austria? Oh now I'm being silly. Hitler was a crypto-homo, he was Austrian, and he never got married. Well no, he did, but then committed suicide, so forget it)
Cut her some slack, now why would I do that?
14 years is more than enough time to dangle that particular carrot.
German is just another word for procrastinator, I should know. ; )
Sometimes, with some people, you just have to bitch slap them into the present.
Angela is long over due a reality check.
As for Hitler...your observation reads more typically str8 to me...can't begin to count all the times I've heard a str8 married friend whisper the words: "Just kill me, please" when the wife pops out of the room.
