Disney And Marvel Add Their Voice Against Anti-LGBT Bill In Georgia
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal is facing increased pressure from the entertainment industry – Disney and Marvel in particular – to veto an anti-LGBT passed by the state legislature last week.
House Bill 757, if signed into law by Deal, would allow pastors in the state to not perform same-sex weddings if that makes them uncomfortable.
The so-called ‘religious freedom’ bill would also give faith-based organizations in the state the option of refusing services to anyone they find ‘objectionable’ or to not hire or retain employees.
The National Football League has vowed to not have any Super Bowls in the state if the law passes and over the weekend, the Human Rights Campaign called on the movie and television industries to boycott doing any filming in the state.
Disney and Marvel are threatening to do just that.
‘Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law,’ a Disney spokesman said on Wednesday.
Georgia has become a popular location for filming because its generous tax incentives help lower production costs.
Marvel”s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is currently shooting outside Atlanta while the latest Captain America film was shot there last summer.
