A man accused of a hate crime pleaded guilty to one charge in court and will not serve any time behind bars.
Paul Martinson pleaded guilty to attempted criminal mischief on Monday.
He was sentenced to 18 months probation and ordered to have no contact with the victims.
He must also pay them $4,200 in restitution.
Police said he was joined by another man in making anti-gay slurs at two men holding hands in downtown Portland in March.
That led to a confrontation, according to police, and Martinson punched one of the victims in the face several times.
Investigators said the other suspect displayed a knife as he directed more slurs at the victim. He is then accused of kicking the victim numerous times.
Police said one of the victims in this case managed to punch both suspects and ran into the club to call for help.
Security at the Silverado Bar and Nightclub downtown reported that the two suspects went to the car of one of the victims, smashed out the windows, slashed the tires and got inside and cut up the seats.
Martinson was detained by security workers at Waterfront Park until police arrived.
The other suspect was not caught.
